Selfies with Blu

I have two German Shepherds, Holly and Blu.  German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) tend to choose a human.  Holly chose Ryan and Blu chose me.  It's kind of like they've chosen who their favorites are and while I LOVE both my dogs, Blu holds a special place in my heart.  When we got Blu, it was a few weeks after we moved to Montana.  He is this boisterous dog who is incredibly vocal.  I had never heard a dog that vocal in my entire life.  When he was a little puppy, he used to make this noise all of the time that sounded like a bird chirping.  Now that he's older, he creates crazy noises...kind of like the whale calls that Dory makes when she's "speaking whale" in Finding Nemo.  While incredibly entertaining, it can be annoying.  I like to think it's his way of "speaking" with us.

Last year, a lot of time, money, and energy was spent on Blu.  He has a medical condition that hasn't actually been fully diagnosed.  We thought he had a version of incontinence and we believe it's a variation of it.  Essentially his bladder and sphincter muscles overwork themselves so that it's difficult for him to pee when he's out in the yard.  He was the fastest potty-trained puppy I had ever known but he would walk around the house and occasionally drip.  It was the craziest thing.  So after numerous vet visits to three different veterinarians, we decided to take a break.  Blu was becoming super accustomed to the vet and I felt bad for our baby.  We then decided to make homemade belly bands.  I made these "diapers" out of old bedsheets and big velcro pieces.  To add an extra layer, we use a baby diaper as a protective barrier.  We basically rip off the attachments and elastic pieces and lay it on the diaper before he get wrapped up.  Last summer, he spent so much time outside because we hadn't even thought of using a diaper system and when winter approached, this method allowed him to spend a lot more time indoors.

Due to all the time he's spent inside, we've seen his personality flourish and it's so fun!  He's so big but he likes to sit in your lap...or on you.  He also loves to snuggle and bed times in our bedroom are his favorite.  He also LOVES food and even on his first few days staying in the house, he would fall asleep in the kitchen.  He hates linoleum flooring because his paws don't have very good grip and for the longest time would only walk backwards on them.  He can now walk forward and backwards.  He loves to craft with me.  While I'm making anything, he will lie down right next to me and play with the ribbons and fabric.  Often times he'll explore the craft room on his own and bring random things from my craft tubs.

I'm obsessed and he's a wonderful dog.  I feel so blessed to have him in my life :)

Holly Bear & Someone Got a DSLR

I must have been super good this year because I got a Nikon DSLR for my birthday/Christmas present! I've been wanting a DSLR for years now and I am so excited to have received one.  Of course, being obsessed with my dog, Holly was my first subject.  She's such an adorable model.  Please do not take or copy these photos without my permission.  Thanks everybody!

5 in Five

FantasticallyAverage

Fantastically Average has this simple, yet practical link-up that I am just lovin' for a Monday.
Five goals that you would like to complete in five days.
Mine are rather mundane but it gets a little spicier towards the end of the week.

1. Do the laundry.

Yes, the large pile that I periodically stare at while typing this.
Did anyone else notice the baby in this picture? Um, that's not mine.

 2. Plan a morale party for the last day with our instructor.

Missiles training is going by so quickly and our current instructor has been awesome so we're celebrating on Thursday with an in-class shin dig.  Remember those back in grade school?  Your classmates all brought in snacks and the best ones were the goodie bags that parents made.  Plus you got stoked outta-yo-mind when you saw the TV on the tv cart in the classroom.
We're totally doing this except I'm without a Barbie backpack
and we're all past the legal drinking age.

3. Add more Halloween decorations

Let's be honest, one cannot have too many Halloween decorations.

4. Take a lot of pictures at Brittany's Halloween-themed Birthday Party.

Expect a blog post because Kim Erskine is the shiz-nit at planning parties.
Expect a Katy Perry-last-friday-night-extravaganza

Don't you just love the 80s? The music, the hair, the neon colors...so fantastic.

5. Remember to vacuum more than once.

Hi, my name is Kim and I own a German Shepherd.  Literally so much dog hair everywhere.
I did, however, purchase a Furminator via Amazon and I am so excited to get it.
Amazon is my homegirl.
Thank you for making an app to make purchasing thing(s) more convenient.
Don't forget that I'm doing a swap-ortunity this month!

Insta-Tuesday: Week Three

Eeee my first link-up! Checking out the Insta Tuesday with Jane over at Taingamala.

Top Left: Ryan and I driving to our friends' house (Meagan and Jeff) to enjoy a Sunday lunch with them.  Meagan made a ton of wings (in three different flavors) and had french bread with spinach dip.  There were also slices of cucumber with a type of cheese spread.  It was super yummy!  Not only did she make that awesome lunch but then she whipped up double chocolate chip cookies.  The girl knows me oh too well.

Top Right: Waiting for an oil change and there was an "O Magazine" for my reading pleasure.  I've never had a chance to check it out and I loved it!  Oprah is amazing and so incredibly successful.  Her magazine has such a positive message, filled with great content, beautiful glossy photos and I definitely want to subscribe.  My car got its carbon filter changed, so now it no longer smells like death.  Huzzah!

Bottom Left: That's my beautiful German Shepherd, Holly.  She's a beauty and getting bigger every week.  Any chance that she gets to snuggle on our bed, we find her already tucked in between pillows.  She's such a cuddle bug!  Recently we've been having difficulties finding a place to live once we go to Vandenberg AFB due to various factors.  Apartments just seem not plausible due to the fact that we have a dog, she's a large breed and she's a German Shepherd.  I swear, if it's not one thing, it's another.  I just wish these insurance companies could see how sweet she is and her love for licking toes and giving kisses (not necessarily in that order lol).

Bottom Right: One of my most recent crafts, an Americana Frame.  I've been meaning to send a great "thank you" to the officer that gave me my oath for commissioning but I felt a card didn't do it justice.  I bought an American-themed bandana from Michael's, soaked it in green tea and sewed it in bunches to create the bundled effect that you see.  The burlap layer was a specialty sheet in scrapbooking- how convenient!

It's almost hump day, ladies and gents!

xoxo,
